Moogfest is in large part an electronic based music festival, but if you look at the lineup of recent years, it’s crossing boundaries into all different types of music. That’s the great thing about Moogfest—it pays homage to the Moog legacy, but the festival itself crosses over into so many genres of music, just as Moog instruments do.

When we create the Moogfest lineup, we’re not necessarily looking for bands that use Moog instruments (although many of them do), we’re looking for bands or artists that embody the Moog spirit, meaning they are innovative, creative, and do things that are outside of the box.

They’re a perfect fit for Moogfest this year. They have one of the best live shows on the road ... and they put on a spectacle. What could be better for Halloween weekend?

The booking process itself is something that we have fun with each and every year.  A lot of times, once we find a few artists, the lineup starts moving in a certain direction and things just start falling into place. For example, once we started looking at an artist like Tangerine Dream, it sent us in the direction of Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Suicide, and Terry Riley.  Sometimes certain key bookings early on lead us to some other acts we would not have initially thought about playing the festival.

As for the headliners, by and large we try to get these artists locked in early on.  We are really excited about all of our headline acts this year, but if I had to single one out it would be the Flaming Lips. They’re a perfect fit for Moogfest this year. They have one of the best live shows on the road; they’re a rock band with electronic elements; and they put on a spectacle. What could be better for Halloween weekend?

I think that Bob Moog would be elated with the lineups we’re putting together. He was all about blurring lines and pushing the envelope. Our Moogfest artists all do that in their own ways.
