Long-time DJ, performer, and musician Moby is often credited—for better or for worse—with bringing dance and techno music into the mainstream. A classically trained musician who’s performed for decades, Moby started out playing with punk rock bands in high school. Today, thanks to a number of accessible albums over the past decade, his name is practically synonymous with electronic music.
One might expect that Moby, whose Facebook fans recently chose his next single, would stick to his roots and use Moogfest as an opportunity to shine behind a collection of synthesizers and Moog creations, but the lineup proclaims that he’ll be there with a full band. Moby does much of his recording alone in his NYC studio apartment (his personal synthesizer and drum machine stash can only be described as epic), and although he is beloved as a DJ, it is a joy to see his creativity shine when surrounded by other artists on the stage.
Although Moogfest bands are in no way limited to Moog instruments or related sounds, it’s probably safe to expect Moby to go in a pointedly electronic and synth direction for the show. Seeing how he’ll combine the band with his signature sound gives Moogfest fans something special to look forward to at his performance. In addition to his mastery of synthesizers and turntables, Moby is a multi-instrumentalist who can also play drums, guitar, bass, and keys and is frequently seen moving around stage to play various instruments during his performances.
Moby’s latest album, synth-heavy Destroyed, was released in May. He calls it a soundtrack for “empty cities at 2 a.m.” How will that translate into the mood of a city throbbing with the excitement of Moogfest on Halloween weekend? We’ll find out on opening night at the Asheville Civic Center Arena.
