Special Installation: Brian Eno's 77 Million Paintings

This year at Moogfest, we have a really exciting guest: Brian Eno, the so-called godfather of modern ambient music (founding member of the band Roxy Music and producer for bands such as U2, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Devo, and Coldplay). To have Brian Eno’s name attached to Moogfest is a big deal for us. He’s probably one of the biggest musical influences on most of the artists on the Moogfest lineup.

While Eno still produces music, he doesn’t play live much anymore. However, he performs in a different way: by creating incredible, large-scale multimedia visual installations. AC Entertainment has been interested in Eno’s 77 Million Paintings installation for some time, but we wanted to present it in the right way, to the right crowed, in the right setting. We thought Moogfest fans, and the city of Asheville, in particular, would really get it.

The installation is basically a cluster of TV monitors that are built into a wall in such a way that they look like floating images. Hand-painted slides are run through computers and displayed in 77 million ways (at this point, it’s probably more like 100 million ways, but the installation keeps its original name). The slides change slowly—really slowly. If you look at them for just a few minutes, you probably won’t even realize they’re moving. You really need to spend some time in this installation to get the most out of what is meant to be a quiet, meditative experience.

As another special treat for Moogfest attendees and Asheville residents, Eno will be giving an “Illustrated Talk” during Moogfest weekend. This will be a separately ticketed event, but Moogfest pass holders will be eligible for discounted tickets. Exactly what Eno will focus on during his talk, and through which mediums he will do it, are up in the air, but one thing is for sure: this legendary artist will be a Moogfest highlight.
