Cloudland Canyon

Bio

Kip Uhlhorn was born and raised in Memphis, TN. He began playing music in high school, but his first band to attract national attention was The Red Scare. They signed to Troubleman Unlimited, released two albums and toured the world. Although The Red Scare never officially broke up, Kip moved to New York City, and upon arrival quickly formed Panthers with Justin Chearno (Turing Machine) and the charred remains of hardcore band Orchid.

During the summer of 2002 Kip took a quick break from Panthers to tour manager Song of Zarathustra (Troubleman labelmates) in Europe. It was on this tour that he met Simon Wojan. Simon approached him and admitted to being a fan of The Red Scare, and by the end of tour they had put a band together, debuting without a name in Germany (The band may or may not have featured Tad Kubler, then SOZ and current Hold Steady guitarist).

They kept in touch, mailing tapes and minidiscs back and forth across the Atlantic, eventually naming their project "Cloudland Canyon". In the meantime, Panthers signed to Vice/Atlantic and toured the world several times. They were so far ahead of their time it took until 2006 for their first album Requiems Der Natur to come out on Tee Pee (recorded partially with gear "borrowed" from Black Dice, Animal Collective, and pre-Gang Gang Dance outfit Death and Dying as Panthers shared a rehearsal space with them). After some EPs and collaborations with Lichens and Mythical Beast (Drag City), their second album Lie in Light came out in April of 2008 on Kranky to some critical acclaim.

Sometime in there Kip got married and moved to Memphis while Simon continued with King Khan and the Shrines. As it seemed unlikely that they would be able to continue their work together anytime soon, Kip started working on a new Cloudland Canyon record as a solo project.

Kip began writing what would become Fin Eaves in October of 2008. 58 tracks were recorded, of which only 9 were used. Musicians on the album range from his wife Kelly (Eden Express) to close friend Jerry Fuchs (Turing Machine, !!!, The Juan MacLean), Matt Hall (The Red Scare), and Jack Oblivian. The record was released in 2010 on west coast psych label Holy Mountain (Wooden Shijps, Daniel Higgs).
