Crystal Castles
Experimental electronic duo Crystal Castles started as producer/instrumentalist Ethan Kath’s solo project in 2003. When he met vocalist Alice Glass, she agreed to write and record lyrics in a studio--and a few months later, unbeknownst to Glass, Kath uploaded the completed tracks to his MySpace page, where they generated buzz and piqued curiosity. One of those tracks was “Alice Practice,” meant to be nothing more than a mic check and eventually turned into a limited edition release.
The band’s first full-length release, self-titled Crystal Castles, included those first tracks. Their sophomore effort was also self-titled. The band got its name from a lyric in a song featured in the cartoon She-Ra: “The fate of the world is safe in Crystal Castles." Their low-fi icy synth-pop sound lends to chaotic and rambunctious live shows with plenty of climbing and stage diving from the ferociously energetic Glass.
