Kode9
Based in South London, Kode9’s hyperdub sound is difficult to define, sometimes with beats, sometimes without, sometimes with a vocalist, sometimes without – the only continuity is the heavy sub bass. Kode9’s sometimes unpredictable dj sets travel through a selection of dubstep, grime, synth-driven hiphop and house, showcased on his 2010 mix for the seminal DJ Kicks compilation series on the label K7. Since 2001, his DJ sets have helped spread the South London sound internationally, across East Asia, Europe, South America, North America and Australia. In 2006 he mixed the Dubstep Allstars Vol.3 CD compilation on Tempa records with Spaceape and their debut album, Memories of the Future.
Kode9 runs the record label Hyperdub (releasing artists such as the Spaceape, Warrior Queen, the Bug and Burial). For 4 years, he hosted the weekly Fwd>> show on London pirate radio station Rinse Fm and is one of the rotating DJs at the seminal nights DMZ and Forward>> in London. As a producer, he has released tracks on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label, pioneering dubstep label Tempa, Soul Jazz, Domino, On U Sound and his own Hyperdub imprint and has remixed artists such as Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the Junior Boys and Dabrye feat. MF Doom and distinctive covers of Prince and The Specials.
Kode9 also runs the record label Hyperdub known for releasing artists such as Burial, Flying Lotus, The Bug, Samiyam, Ikonika, Darkstar and Zomby. He has also had music included in the feature film Children of Men. As Steve Goodman, he published the book Sonic Warfare on MIT Press in 2010 which examined the use of sound as a weapon for modulating population behaviour and is currently working on a sequel text. As part of the AUDINT research collective, he has installed a series of multimedia exhibitions at the Academy of the Arts, Berlin through to a forthcoming event, 'Unsound Systems' at the Art in General gallery, New York in 2011.
